Public Safety

Under the general direction of the Mayor, the Director of Public Safety exercises the highest possible degree of leadership, authority, judgment, and discretion in the oversight of Police Department, Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services Department functions and operations:
  • Building safety
  • Communications
  • Crime prevention
  • Efficient medical services
  • Efficient use of personnel
  • Fire fighting
  • Investigations
  • Jail operations
  • Juvenile diversion
  • Patrol
  • Safety and security
  • Traffic and parking enforcement
  • All other activities necessary to fulfill their missions
The Director of Public Safety confers with the Mayor on all matters of major significance or importance regarding the Police Department, Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services Department. The Director of Public Safety directly supervises the Chief of Police and Fire Chief.

The Director of Public Safety attends meetings of City Council and the Safety Committee as directed by the Mayor. Duties of the Director of Public Safety are enumerated in §705.83 of the Ohio Revised Code.
